I believe there are a number of reasons that Rooney got himself caught in this situation.
The excitement of winning, peer pressure, wanting to prove himself to his team mates and more importantly once he had started losing, he would have wanted to bet his way out of the situation. Anyone who has ever traded on the stock market or spreadbet in any way knows that it takes a very disciplined and savvy investor who is able to cut their losses and take a hit.
