Gout Guru Gav

Gav the Gout Guru is what my piss taking family are calling me.

It might be funny if it wasn’t so bloody painful. I’ve known a few people over the years that have suffered but never really paid that much attention to it.

That’s all changed now… I’ve never really had any sort of chronic pain before but the past week has been dreadful, thankfully I think I’ve nipped it in the bud however the longer process starts now of working out what types of food and drinks I may need to limit and even avoid.

Gout is formed by a build-up of Uric Acid that crystallizes in the joints usually the big toe and causes extreme pain that you can’t seem to get any relief from, I had 3 of my worst nights of sleep ever this past week.

Interestingly at the Integrative and  Personalised Medicine Conference, I was at 2 weeks ago Dr. David Perlmutter (i missed the talk) was talking about his latest book ‘Drop Acid’ ( now purchased the book) as he believes that Uric Acid is going to be an increasingly important bio-marker that will be tracked in medicine as it’s a predictor of other serious illnesses.  More on all of this later.

One of the biggest risk factors for Gout is being overweight and other lifestyle factors usually associated with ‘good living’ excessive alcohol and sugars particularly fructose, shellfish, and organ meats.
So in a way, I am surprised that Gout has paid me a visit so it is going to be interesting to see what are the triggers for me.

My first step for the past 2 days has been to drink coffee with MCT oil and eat 5 nut bars (these are a mixture of Macadamia, Pecans, Almonds, Cocoa Nibs with a tiny amount of honey and inulin.  I’ve also purchased a Uric Acid blood test monitor.

This seems to have done the trick as the pain has pretty much disappeared so from now on I will be taking note of the food that I am eating and any response in pain to ascertain what foods and or drinks might be causing a flare-up.
